Human Rights Abuses Unveiled: M23 Rebels' Occupation of Uvira

M23 rebels and the Rwandan army perpetrated egregious human rights violations during a month-long occupation of Uvira in eastern Congo, according to a report by Human Rights Watch.

In December, rebels briefly seized Uvira but withdrew following pressure from the United States. The report documented 53 summary executions, eight rapes, and 12 enforced disappearances during their control.

Despite diplomatic efforts, violence persists in eastern Congo leading Washington to impose sanctions on Rwanda for its alleged backing of M23, a claim Rwanda refutes.
