A court in Assam's Kokrajhar district handed down a 20-year rigorous imprisonment sentence to Mohar Ali for sexually abusing a minor, marking a significant verdict in the case filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The Additional Sessions Judge-cum-Special Judge, Nurjamal Haque, also imposed a Rs 25,000 fine on Ali, with an additional six-month jail term if the fine is not paid. The conviction comes four years after the crime was committed in a secluded jute field in Kathalguri village.
The incident led to public outrage and was pursued diligently by law enforcement, culminating in Friday's verdict. The victim's family had filed an FIR at Kokrajhar police station, catalyzing the investigation and eventual apprehension of the perpetrator.
