Tragedy struck at an Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL) mine in Asansol, West Bengal, when an air blast resulted in one fatality and left 11 injured, local police reported on Thursday. Approximately 120 workers were underground when the blast occurred, said senior police officer Dhruba Das, confirming the completion of rescue operations.
An ECL official, speaking to Reuters, mentioned that the mine's operations faced no significant impact. ECL is part of Coal India, a state-run mining entity.
Earlier reports from the Economic Times indicated that at least 40 workers might have been injured in the unfortunate accident, highlighting discrepancies in the number of those affected.
