Greece has called on the European Union to intervene in what it labels as unlawful fishing by Turkish vessels in the eastern Mediterranean. The ongoing dispute focuses on maritime jurisdiction and fishing rights between NATO allies Greece and Turkey, who have longstanding disagreements over their maritime boundaries.
Shipping Minister Vasilis Kikilias addressed the issue with European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, highlighting Greece's concerns about Turkish actions. Kikilias asserted that such violations challenge Greece's sovereign rights and urged the EU for support, stating, "Greek sea borders are also Europe's borders."
Turkish officials have yet to comment on the matter. The EU Commission has acknowledged the responsibility of coastal states for enforcement, supporting Greece through patrols and satellite imagery. Despite frequent disputes, Greece and Turkey have been in talks about resolving maritime zone demarcations.
