Assam is set to introduce a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a legal reform prioritizing equal rights for women and children, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday.
The UCC is designed to standardize laws on marriage, divorce, and inheritance, excluding tribal communities to safeguard their traditions. Sarma highlighted its aim to ensure 'justice for every citizen' and impose penalties for false statements to maintain legal integrity.
The first cabinet meeting has approved this significant reform, with the draft bill scheduled for presentation in the Assembly on May 26.
