In a significant political development, the JD(S) has urged its ally, the BJP, to amend specific provisions within the proposed 129th Constitutional Amendment Bill concerning the 'One Nation-One Election' initiative. The focus is on special powers granted to the Election Commission of India for recommending the postponement of state elections.
A Parliamentary Joint Committee engaged in discussions on this matter with various political parties in Bengaluru. The JD(S) emphasized the need for legal protections to maintain stability within coalition governments and safeguard regional parties from national parties' dominating campaigns during simultaneous elections.
According to a statement, the JD(S), led by former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, supports the bill conditionally, suggesting essential amendments. Party representatives argue for incorporating legal measures to ensure coalition governments' stability, reflecting their longstanding governance structures at both state and national levels.
