The West Bengal government, under newly elected Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, has fast-tracked the land acquisition process for building a fence along the India-Bangladesh border. State Minister Ashok Kirtania assured that land would be handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF) within 45 days.
Progress has been mainly smooth across North 24 Parganas district, with some resistance reported in Basirhat. Residents are refusing to vacate or accept rehabilitation efforts, Kirtania noted. Discussions with district authorities are underway to resolve these issues swiftly.
The BJP government has earmarked about 600 acres for the project. The opposition claims this addresses long-standing delays in the fencing process, a point of contention with the previous Trinamool Congress government. Stakeholders aim to complete the fencing on 569 uncovered kilometers of the border.
