Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari today conducted a comprehensive review of the quality, maintenance, and progress of National Highway projects covering 11,672 kilometers across Uttar Pradesh during a high-level meeting held in New Delhi. The review came in response to feedback and concerns received through media reports and social media platforms regarding the condition and upkeep of several highway stretches in the state.
The meeting was attended by Union Ministers of State for Road Transport and Highways Shri Ajay Tamta and Shri Harsh Malhotra, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), engineers, consultants, and representatives of project contractors involved in highway construction and maintenance works.
During the detailed review session, Shri Gadkari stressed the need for strict adherence to construction quality standards, timely completion of ongoing projects, and regular monitoring of highway maintenance activities. He directed officials and contractors to ensure that all projects are executed with maximum transparency, efficiency, and accountability to provide safer and smoother travel experiences for commuters.
Highlighting the importance of world-class infrastructure in India’s development journey, the Minister said that modern and durable road networks are essential for strengthening connectivity between cities, rural areas, industrial corridors, and logistics hubs. He noted that improved highways significantly contribute to economic growth by reducing travel time, lowering transportation costs, boosting trade, and generating employment opportunities.
Shri Gadkari also emphasized the use of advanced technologies and innovative construction techniques in highway development projects. He encouraged agencies to adopt modern road engineering solutions, intelligent traffic systems, improved drainage mechanisms, and environmentally sustainable construction methods to enhance the durability and safety of highways.
A major focus of the meeting was preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season. The Minister instructed officials to undertake preventive maintenance measures on priority to avoid waterlogging, potholes, road damage, and traffic disruptions during heavy rainfall. He directed authorities to establish rapid response systems and emergency maintenance teams to address issues immediately and ensure uninterrupted traffic movement on national highways.
Officials were also asked to pay special attention to accident-prone zones and improve road safety infrastructure, including signage, crash barriers, lighting systems, lane markings, and emergency response facilities. Shri Gadkari reiterated the government’s commitment to reducing road accidents and improving commuter safety across the national highway network.
Uttar Pradesh, being one of India’s largest states with rapidly growing industrial and economic activity, has witnessed massive investments in highway infrastructure in recent years. Several major expressways and highway expansion projects are currently under development to strengthen connectivity between major cities, religious tourism centers, agricultural regions, and border areas.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has been aggressively expanding India’s highway network under various flagship initiatives aimed at enhancing logistics efficiency and boosting regional development. Uttar Pradesh has emerged as a key beneficiary of these infrastructure initiatives due to its strategic location and large population base.
The review meeting reflects the government’s increasing focus on maintaining high construction standards and ensuring long-term sustainability of road infrastructure projects. By addressing public concerns and incorporating citizen feedback into administrative reviews, the Ministry aims to improve transparency and responsiveness in infrastructure governance.
Shri Gadkari reiterated that all stakeholders, including contractors, consultants, and officials, must work in close coordination to deliver high-quality infrastructure projects within stipulated timelines while maintaining safety and environmental standards.
