The Vigilance Department caught a police constable red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 45,000 in Betalghat area of Uttarakhand's Nainital on Monday, officials said.

The accused constable, identified as Deepak Singh, was posted at the Betalghat police station.

According to the officials, a person engaged in a government mining lease project lodged the complaint.

The complainant alleged that Singh demanded money by threatening to fine and impound the vehicles transporting the RBM (River Bed Material) from the mining site.

Singh used to threaten to seize the vehicles going to a local stone crusher.

The Vigilance Department formed a team and laid a trap after finding the allegations prima facie true. The team caught the constable red-handed while accepting the Rs 45,000 bribe, they added.
