Pradhan Urges States to Ensure Student Safety and Facilities for NEET-UG 2026 Re-Examination

Union Education Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan has written to all Chief Ministers, Lieutenant Governors, and Administrators across the country seeking their cooperation for the smooth, transparent, and fair conduct of the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination scheduled for June 21, 2026.

In view of the severe heatwave conditions prevailing in several parts of the country, the Minister has also urged state governments and local administrations to ensure that adequate facilities and student welfare measures are in place at all examination centres to safeguard the comfort, health, and well-being of candidates appearing for the highly competitive medical entrance examination.

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) is one of India’s largest and most important entrance examinations, conducted annually for admission to undergraduate medical courses including MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other allied healthcare programmes. The examination attracts lakhs of aspirants from across the country and requires extensive coordination among central and state authorities to ensure smooth conduct.

In his communication to the states and Union Territories, Shri Pradhan emphasised the need for proactive arrangements in view of the extreme weather conditions affecting many regions during the summer season.

“In view of the prevailing heatwave conditions, I request you to kindly issue appropriate instructions to the District Authorities and all schools, colleges, universities, and other institutions hosting the examination in your State/UT to ensure the availability of essential basic amenities for the convenience of candidates,” the Minister stated in his letter.

The Union Minister specifically highlighted the need for examination centres to provide safe drinking water, adequate seating arrangements, functioning fans and coolers, clean washrooms, shaded waiting areas, uninterrupted electricity supply, and portable toilets wherever required.

The Ministry of Education has stressed that the interests and welfare of students remain of paramount importance, particularly considering the physical strain that extreme heat conditions can place on candidates travelling long distances and spending extended hours at examination venues.

Shri Pradhan also urged state governments to ensure adequate transportation facilities for candidates on the day of the examination so that students are able to reach their centres safely and on time despite weather-related challenges.

Officials noted that district administrations, educational institutions, police authorities, health departments, and transport agencies may be required to coordinate closely to ensure effective crowd management, traffic regulation, medical support, and logistical arrangements during the examination process.

The Minister expressed confidence that all states and Union Territories would extend full cooperation to ensure that the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination is conducted in a fair, transparent, peaceful, and student-friendly manner.

The appeal comes at a time when several regions across India continue to experience intense heatwave conditions, with temperatures rising significantly above seasonal averages in parts of northern, central, and western India. Authorities have increasingly been taking precautionary measures to protect public health, especially among students, children, senior citizens, and vulnerable populations.

Educational experts note that large-scale national examinations conducted during summer months require special logistical planning due to risks associated with dehydration, heat exhaustion, and travel disruptions.

Over the past few years, examination authorities and governments have introduced several measures aimed at improving candidate comfort and examination management, including better centre infrastructure, digital monitoring systems, enhanced security arrangements, and expanded grievance redressal mechanisms.

The NEET examination holds enormous significance for medical aspirants across India, as performance in the examination determines admission to undergraduate medical institutions across both government and private colleges.

Given the scale and sensitivity of the examination process, authorities are expected to place special emphasis on transparency, fairness, security, and student welfare during the conduct of the re-examination.

Officials believe the coordinated efforts between the Union Government, state administrations, educational institutions, and local authorities will be critical in ensuring a smooth examination process amid challenging weather conditions.
