Opposition Grows Against Maharashtra's Temple Land Legislation

In a significant show of opposition, temple trusts and Hindu organizations in Maharashtra have rejected the proposed 'Maharashtra Devasthan Inam Abolition Draft Act 2026.' This legislation, they argue, unfairly targets the properties of Hindu temples while excusing Waqf land from similar scrutiny.

The opposition was formally declared at the 'Temple Land Protection Conference' in Mumbai, where representatives passed a resolution advocating for the legislation's immediate withdrawal. The Maharashtra Mandir Mahasangh emphasized that the government should focus on resolving pressing temple issues rather than seizing temple lands.

Conference speakers highlighted the neglect of rural and historic temples, noting the financial struggles faced by priests. They called on the government for action, including improved salaries for priests, restoration of ancient temples, establishment of estate officers for temple properties, and provision of funds for administration.
