EU Scrutinizes Czech PM's Business Empire Over Subsidy Concerns

The European Commission has raised questions about possible conflicts of interest involving EU subsidies and businesses in Prime Minister Andrej Babis' vast conglomerate, Agrofert. Czech media outlets have reported that the Commission is seeking further legal insights into the structure designed to prevent such conflicts.

The Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy of the Commission is demanding guarantees that companies affiliated with Babis, particularly those outside the Agrofert trust, are not beneficiaries of EU funding. Until the issues are clarified, the Commission advises against seeking repayments from the EU for subsidies to these entities.

Billionaire Babis, who oversees numerous enterprises benefiting from EU subsidies, plans to shift Agrofert shares into a trust to align with conflict-of-interest regulations. However, recent communications indicate that more clarity is needed before the issue is settled, impacting Czech state finances if EU funds are withheld.
