The Himachal Pradesh government has appointed Sanjay Gupta as the Chief Secretary of the state, just days before his retirement, prompting significant political and administrative debate. The appointment, conducted through a notification from the Personnel Department, comes amid judicial scrutiny and is stated to be in 'public interest'.

Gupta, a senior IAS officer from the 1988 batch, had been serving as the Acting Chief Secretary while also handling other departmental responsibilities. His role is currently under judicial review following a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) due to ongoing investigations under the Prevention of Corruption Act. These cases, dating back to 1996, 2008, and 2009, question Gupta's fitness for this high-profile post.

Despite denying allegations and asserting that attempts are being made to damage his reputation, Gupta's appointment has generated further speculation about potential service extension post-retirement. As his tenure officially lasts less than a week, discussions are underway about the next Chief Secretary to take charge from June 1.
