Czech Republic's Strategic Ammunition Initiative: Strengthening Ukraine's Artillery Arsenal

The Czech Republic's strategic initiative to supply Ukraine with large-calibre ammunition is set to deliver around 1 million rounds by 2026, according to the Czech defence ministry. Originally established in 2024 to address Ukraine's artillery gap with Russia, the program persisted despite nearly being scrapped by Prime Minister Andrej Babis's government.

The Financial Times reports a decline in the number of donor countries following Babis's entry into office, dropping to nine contributors. In response to Reuters, the ministry confirmed that 500,000 rounds have been delivered in 2026, consistent with last year's supply. The timeline indicates these deliveries result from pre-existing contracts.

Notably, the initiative combines efforts from foreign donors like Denmark, the Netherlands, and Germany, alongside Czech arms traders. Funding continues from frozen Russian assets via the European Commission, despite Babis's refusal for further national contributions. The increasing costs of extended-range artillery pose additional challenges for the initiative.
