An engineer and a driver from the Uttar Pradesh State Construction Corporation were caught attempting to accept a bribe of Rs-1 lakh to process a contractor's pending dues. The incident occurred in Meerut, and authorities intervened as the exchange was taking place.
The engineer, Yogendra Singh, reportedly tried to evade capture when officials from the Anti-Corruption Organisation (ACO) stormed the premises. The operation was triggered by a complaint from contractor Satyendra Singh Tomar, who claimed that substantial payments had been withheld despite completing work in 2023.
The police disclosed that the bribe's original demand was Rs 1.70 lakh, later settled at Rs 1 lakh. The driver, Neeraj Pal, accepted the money on behalf of the engineer. Upon taking the cash, Pal was arrested immediately, and Yogendra Singh was detained as he attempted to flee.
Both individuals are currently under interrogation, with proceedings underway as per the Prevention of Corruption Act, according to police statements.
