The Supreme Court of India has affirmed the Election Commission's authority to conduct a Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, solidifying its role in maintaining fair electoral processes. The decision, led by Surya Kant, came despite challenges raised by several political leaders and organizations.
The controversy began when the Election Commission announced the revision in June 2025. Concerns escalated when the NGO 'Association For Democratic Reforms' filed a public interest litigation against the initiative. Following the revision, approximately 65 lakh names were removed from the voter list, leaving 7.24 crore eligible voters.
By late September, the total number of electors was updated to 7.42 crores, with the final list showing a decrease of nearly 47 lakh voters. The court directed the Election Commission to provide specifics on voters excluded from the list and instructed district bodies to assist those affected in appealing the decision. Ultimately, on May 27, the court ruled in favor of the Commission, stating the revision bolsters the constitutional mandate for fair elections.
