The inaugural session of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly wrapped up on Wednesday, marking the passage of the pivotal 'Assam Uniform Civil Code Bill 2026'. Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass reflected on the notable events of the five-day legislative gathering, including the oath-taking ceremony for new members and the governor's address.
On the opening day, the legislators took their oaths under the guidance of pro-tem Speaker Chandra Mohan Patowary. BJP's Ranjeet Kumar Dass was also elected as the permanent Speaker the same day. During the session, Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya delivered his speech, contributing to the Assembly's key developments.
Apart from the UCC Bill, the Assembly adopted a government resolution advocating for the swift implementation of 33 percent women's reservation in Parliament and state legislatures following delimitation. The Speaker credited the Assembly's first session with substantial legislative progress before adjourning proceedings sine die.
