The Kerala government, led by the UDF, unveiled a series of women and child-friendly policies in a recent legislative session. A significant highlight is the introduction of up to three days of menstrual leave for schoolgirls each month, designed to aid in their educational pursuits and overall well-being.
Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar outlined these initiatives in the State Assembly, emphasizing the state's commitment to gender equality and health. Alongside the menstrual leave scheme, the government will implement Project Menstrual Dignity, which aims to make educational spaces more accommodating for girls and women.
Further plans include the establishment of safe daycare facilities in workplaces with more than 50 employees, as required by the Maternity Benefit Act. The administration also seeks to transform Kerala into a woman-friendly state, offering equal pay for women and extending special benefits to those working in the unorganised sector.
Other initiatives include the Destitute and Orphan-Free Kerala Initiative, which aims to make Kerala the first orphan-free state by promoting adoption and fostering. Restroom facilities will be developed in major towns, and necessities like sanitary products will be made available to women.
