In a tragic incident in Manipur's Ukhrul district, a truck driver was killed and a police constable injured when suspected militants opened fire on a goods vehicle convoy, officials reported on Friday.

The convoy, escorted by a joint team of the BSF, CRPF, and police, was ambushed near TM Kasom, resulting in the death of 57-year-old truck driver Nitish Kumar from West Bengal. The local chief minister condemned the attack, labeling it cowardly, and highlighted efforts to restore peace and safety for transport vehicles.

Security forces engaged with the attackers, leading to a brief firefight. Meanwhile, efforts to apprehend those responsible are underway. The chief executive expressed condolences for the driver's death and wished for the injured officer's swift recovery, reinforcing the government's resolve to maintain unhindered movement along vital transport routes.

In an earlier interaction, the state's leadership had engaged with the Manipur Truck Owners' Welfare Association to address highway safety, reiterating their commitment to ensuring safe transit and highway clearance.
