Intelligence agencies in Russia are ramping up efforts to illicitly obtain Western technology and defense secrets as their economy struggles under stringent sanctions, according to senior European intelligence officials. These efforts include setting up fake companies and using cyber operations to acquire vital technologies.
The sanctions have left Russia unable to procure necessary machinery and tech from European sources. In Sweden, Russia's interest centers on advanced weaponry technology like that used in Gripen fighter jets, and dual-use technologies. Intel officials note that Russia's espionage campaigns also focus on the defense industry and high-end research.
Anne Keast-Butler from the UK's signals intelligence agency has accused Russia of pursuing a relentless campaign against the UK and its allies by stealing technology and planning sabotage. The complexity of these schemes demands that companies be vigilant against becoming unwitting participants in these illegal operations.
With a significant part of its GDP dedicated to the war, Russia's economic landscape is fraught with challenges. Experts caution that if Western policy pressure continues, Russia may face a financial crisis, particularly with fluctuating global oil prices affecting their economic stability.
