Deadly Explosion in Myanmar: Over 45 Fatalities in Incident Involving Explosives

An explosion occurred in northeastern Myanmar on Sunday, resulting in the tragic loss of more than 45 lives. The incident took place in a building reportedly used for storing mining explosives, according to both rescue teams and independent media sources.

Around 70 individuals sustained injuries from the blast, which happened around noon in the village of Kaungtup within Namhkam township, a region roughly 3 km from the Chinese border. This area falls under the jurisdiction of the Ta'ang National Liberation Army, an ethnic armed group opposing Myanmar's central government.

One rescuer on site reported that 46 bodies, including those of six children, were retrieved and taken for cremation by Sunday evening. Due to security concerns, this rescuer requested anonymity. They further stated that 74 injured people were transported to the local hospital, and efforts to manage the aftermath are ongoing.

Another rescuer, also speaking anonymously, noted that the explosion led to around 40 fatalities and inflicted damage on more than 100 nearby houses. Emergency services continue to address the situation, and the number of casualties and damaged structures might increase as operations proceed.
