Estrada's Arrest: A New Chapter in Philippine Corruption Scandal

Philippine Senator Jose 'Jinggoy' Estrada surrendered to authorities Monday after a court issued an arrest warrant against him for alleged plunder. Estrada, son of a former president, faces charges of receiving corrupt payments in an infrastructure scandal that ignited protests earlier this year.

The Office of the Ombudsman charged Estrada for allegedly getting kickbacks totaling 573 million pesos ($9.3 million). The senator, who denies any misconduct, emphasized his intention to defend himself in court and avoid seeking refuge in the Senate for immunity.

The controversy, which involves defective flood-control projects, has added to public frustration over corruption and contributed to recent economic slowdowns in the Philippines.
