Diplomatic Ties Under the Spotlight: Taiwan, China, and the Vatican

Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te extended congratulations to the newly appointed Pope Leo on Friday, emphasizing the intent to build upon longstanding diplomatic ties to promote peace and justice. In contrast, China offered a quieter response, reflecting its complex relationship with the Vatican.

The Vatican, one of only 12 countries maintaining official diplomatic relationships with Taiwan, continues to navigate its ties amid China's influence. Taiwan's foreign ministry confirmed that Lai communicated his congratulatory message via its Vatican embassy.

Both Taiwan and China have vested interests in engaging with the Vatican. The Vatican and China recently renewed an agreement on the appointment of bishops, a move that continues to worry Taiwan. Despite the challenges, Taiwan remains committed to reinforcing its relationship with the Holy See.
