Clash of Leaders: Zelenskiy and Putin Face Critical Peace Talks in Istanbul
Ukrainian President Zelenskiy will attend peace talks in Istanbul only if Russian President Putin participates. US envoys support the discussions aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war, though Putin's attendance remains uncertain. Kyiv insists on a ceasefire before negotiations, backed by European allies.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has declared he will engage in peace discussions in Istanbul this week, provided Russian President Vladimir Putin also attends, according to a statement from a Ukrainian aide. This move directly challenges the Kremlin's commitment towards peace efforts.
The U.S. has deployed senior envoys Steve Witkoff and Keith Kellogg to Istanbul for talks, highlighting the urgency to end Russia's war in Ukraine, which has persisted since the February 2022 invasion. The uncertainty surrounding Russian representation remains, with U.S. President Donald Trump emphasizing the importance of a ceasefire.
With both Kyiv and Moscow positioning themselves as advocates for peace, the dialogue in Istanbul marks a significant moment. However, disagreements, particularly regarding territorial concessions and NATO aspirations, continue to impede progress, with a comprehensive 30-day ceasefire as the current focal point of international diplomatic efforts.
