Tensions flared in Kerala's Malappuram district on Thursday as United Democratic Front (UDF) and Left Democratic Front (LDF) workers clashed during the Nilambur Assembly by-election. The UDF filed a police complaint, accusing LDF workers of illegal campaigning near polling stations after the official campaign period had ended.

Police responded by detaining two individuals, though local CPI(M) officials claimed they were not affiliated with the LDF. Despite the altercations, voting proceeded without further incident at the Punchakkoli polling station, situated in a remote forest area where committed voters arrived to cast their ballots.

The by-election features key candidates: M Swaraj for LDF, Aryadan Shoukath for UDF, and BJP candidate Adv. Mohan George. Triggered by the resignation of PV Anvar, this contest is seen as a critical precursor to the 2026 Assembly elections, with results expected on June 23.
