New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, on his maiden visit to China as head of state, met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping to highlight the critical trade partnership between the two countries.
His visit, which began with meetings in Shanghai, centered on maintaining strong economic ties with Beijing despite geopolitical tensions, including differences over security issues and China's rift with the United States.
Luxon emphasized the economic benefits derived from China's relationship, which accounts for over 20% of New Zealand's exports, and discussed regional tensions and China's potential role in resolving global challenges, such as the conflict in Ukraine.
