Former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has criticized the Congress for the imposition of the Emergency in 1975, labeling it a 'draconian measure'. Naidu insists that the Congress should apologize to the public for the significant curtailing of civil liberties experienced during this period.
Speaking in an exclusive PTI interview, Naidu, who was a student leader at Andhra University at the time, recounted spending nearly one and a half years in prison for opposing the government's actions. He underlined the importance of Congress expressing regret during the 50th anniversary of the Emergency.
Naidu recounted personal experiences from the Emergency era, describing press censorship and various challenges faced by political detainees. He noted that, although he faced arrest, the measures were more lenient in some southern states.
