In preparation for upcoming local body elections in Telangana, the Congress party has undertaken significant changes in its leadership structure. On Tuesday, a new Vice President and General Secretary were appointed to enhance the party's organizational effectiveness and strategic approach, underscoring the urgency of fortifying its ranks to secure electoral victory.
Party stalwart Madhu Goud Yaskhi emphasized the necessity of consolidating the party's influence, particularly against the backdrop of imminent elections. He stated that a new Public Affairs Advisory Committee has also been installed, demonstrating a robust effort to streamline the party's focus on local electoral challenges.
The term limits of key local representatives, including sarpanches and members of both the Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency and Zilla Praja Parishad Territorial Constituency, concluded last year, prompting this strategic shift. Despite the Congress's 18-month presence in power, Yaskhi admitted some setbacks in regaining power across certain regions, acknowledging internal challenges such as defiant MLAs and brewing factionalism.
Yaskhi further pointed out the importance of addressing crucial issues such as the caste census—an element poised to be instrumental in shaping the party's electoral tactics. He highlighted Congress's potential plans to propose 42 per cent reservations for Backward Classes in the coming elections, pending presidential approval of the recent Assembly bill. The state Cabinet is expected to deliberate further on the implementation of this BC quota initiative.
