French President Emmanuel Macron criticizes the imposition of trade tariffs among NATO allies amidst increasing defense spending. Speaking after a NATO summit, Macron emphasized the need for trade peace, highlighting that Russia remains the primary threat. He urged lowering tariff barriers and ending trade disputes.

French President Emmanuel Macron has criticized what he calls an 'aberration' in NATO's strategy of urging increased defense expenditure while engaging in trade conflicts. Speaking in The Hague post-NATO summit, Macron urged NATO allies to restore peaceful trade relations, noting that Russia continues to be a central threat to the alliance.
Macron emphasized Europe's strengthened role within NATO, following commitments to escalate defense budgets by 2035. He remarked, 'We can't say we are going to spend more, and then at the heart of NATO, launch a trade war,' pointing out the contradiction in pursuing defense budget increases while persisting with trade disputes.
Highlighting the necessity of lowering tariffs, Macron revealed he has discussed the issue multiple times with U.S. President Donald Trump, advocating that the ongoing tariff impositions should cease for the sake of alliance unity and economic stability among the members.
