In a pointed critique, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of capitalizing on the 50th anniversary of the Emergency as a diversionary tactic. He claimed the government is trying to obscure critical issues like unemployment, inflation, and demonetization failures.

Addressing a press conference, Kharge expressed his displeasure, stating, "We are facing an undeclared emergency in the country today... By focusing on the Emergency anniversary, the BJP avoids addressing pressing issues." He criticized the administration for directing states to officially mark the day, casting doubt on BJP's adherence to constitutional values.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah retorted, describing the Emergency as an "era of injustice" driven by Congress's quest for power. The Modi administration named it 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' to enlighten future generations on the dangers of dictatorship. The Union Cabinet also paid tribute to those who resisted during the Emergency, emphasizing India's enduring commitment to democracy.
