In a historic move, Spain's former king, Juan Carlos, is set to publish his memoirs by the end of this year, according to Planeta publishing house. His role in Spain's transition to democracy was once celebrated, but his legacy is marred by scandals that forced him to abdicate in 2014.
Despite investigations by Spanish and Swiss prosecutors into allegations of fraud, the cases were dismissed due to insufficient evidence and expired statutes of limitations. Juan Carlos's lawyer maintained that prosecutors failed to find any evidence of criminal conduct.
The memoir, titled "Reconciliation," penned in the first person, seeks to emphasize his contributions to Spain's democratic progress, overshadowed by self-imposed exile and personal mistakes. Planeta highlights that the book will provide detailed anecdotes from his private and public life.
