Ecuador's Ex-VP Jorge Glas Sentenced to More Prison Time Over Corruption
Former Ecuadorean Vice President Jorge Glas has been sentenced to 13 additional years in prison for misusing public funds intended for earthquake reconstruction. Already serving time for two prior corruption cases, Glas' new sentence extends his release to 2041. The court cited embezzlement related to reconstruction efforts.

In a significant development on Monday, an Ecuadorean court has handed former Vice President Jorge Glas an additional 13-year prison sentence for allegedly mishandling public funds earmarked for rebuilding regions devastated by a 2016 earthquake.
Jorge Glas, who is already serving prison terms from two previous corruption charges, faced an extended release date now set for 2041. The decision also affects Carlos Bernal, a former official who was similarly sentenced for his role in the reconstruction efforts in the Manabi and Esmeraldas provinces.
Judges applied the harshest penalty available, citing evidence that Glas diverted funds for unrelated uses. While his lawyer charged that this case is politically motivated, the case has intensified diplomatic tensions, notably after Glas was arrested at the Mexican embassy in Quito last year.
