China Sanctions Former Philippine Senator Over South China Sea Stance
China has sanctioned former Philippine Senator Francis Tolentino, barring him from entry due to his 'egregious conduct' related to the South China Sea. Tolentino, who served a six-year term, was notable for proposing maritime laws opposed by China. The sanctions were criticized by Tolentino as he vows to continue his advocacy.

China has imposed sanctions on Francis Tolentino, a former senator of the Philippines, preventing his entry to the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, and Macau. The move, announced on Tuesday, cited 'egregious conduct' by Tolentino on issues such as the contested South China Sea.
During his tenure, Tolentino was instrumental in pushing for legislation that articulated the Philippines' sea lanes and maritime zones—legislation that faced opposition from China. According to the Chinese foreign ministry, some Filipino politicians have been making 'malicious remarks and moves' affecting diplomatic relations between China and the Philippines.
Tolentino, whose bid for a second senatorial term was unsuccessful, responded defiantly to the sanctions, branding them a 'badge of honour'. He vowed to continue advocating for Philippine sovereignty in the face of China's contested claims in the South China Sea, a vital global trade route discredited by a 2016 international ruling.
