The Sri Lankan Navy announced the arrest of seven Indian fishermen on Tuesday, accusing them of poaching in the country's waters. This is the second such arrest within the space of a week.
According to a Navy spokesman, the arrests occurred on Monday night in the territorial waters near Talaimannar. The detained fishermen and their trawler will be handed over to the fisheries inspectorate in Mannar for further action.
This incident intensifies the ongoing dispute over fishing rights between India and Sri Lanka, with both countries frequently arresting each other's fishermen for unintentional border crossings in the Palk Strait—a crucial fishing zone between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.
