Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi launched a strong critique against the Modi government, accusing it of showing indifference to the increasing farmer suicides in Maharashtra. On Thursday, Gandhi highlighted how farmers continue to fall deeper into debt due to expensive inputs like seeds, fertilizers, and fuel.
Posting on X in Hindi, Gandhi stressed the government's failure to address demands for a loan waiver and a legally-backed minimum support price (MSP) for crops. A series of walkouts were staged by the opposition members in the Maharashtra Assembly over the suicides and delayed payments to soybean cultivators.
The issue has sparked a debate, with BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya counter-attacking by blaming the Congress-NCP's past governance, accusing them of similar neglect, noting that 55,928 suicides occurred during their 15-year rule.
