In a recent development, forty-eight Venezuelans have been freed following a prisoner exchange between Venezuela and the United States, according to human rights NGO Foro Penal.
The swap included 57 individuals previously classified as political prisoners, with 48 of them being Venezuelans and the rest Americans or U.S. permanent residents. However, controversy surrounds the lack of an official verification list, as some circulated lists mistakenly included non-political detainees and deceased individuals.
The opposition has lauded the releases but highlighted that nearly 1,000 political prisoners remain incarcerated. Meanwhile, the former detainees are undergoing medical evaluations, and families anxiously await their homecomings.
