Thailand and Cambodia have recommitted to a ceasefire along their contentious border after China intervened diplomatically. This fragile peace follows several days of hostilities, which have tested the ceasefire agreed upon in Malaysia. Accusations of aggression intensified until Wednesday when both nations expressed renewed commitment in a meeting with Chinese Vice Minister Sun Weidong in Shanghai.
Thai officials claimed Cambodia violated the ceasefire with attacks in multiple areas, while Cambodia denied such actions. Diplomatic pressure from the US and mediation by China appear to have aided in de-escalating the situation, which has resulted in at least 41 deaths since fighting began anew last Thursday.
The fighting displaced more than 260,000 people, with a fraction returning home amidst ongoing unease. Residents remain cautious about their future as they await more concrete resolutions between the involved nations, marking yet another chapter in the troubled history of the 800-kilometre border region.
