Meghalaya's political landscape experienced a significant shift as Ronnie V Lyngdoh, the state's sole Congress MLA, transitioned to the ruling National People's Party (NPP). The move saw Lyngdoh, who represents the Mylliem constituency, officially submit a letter of merger to Speaker Thomas A Sangma under the anti-defection law.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, alongside other senior leaders, accompanied Lyngdoh during his induction into the NPP. This development follows the previous defection of three other Congress MLAs, who joined the NPP in August 2024, increasing the party's strength in the assembly.
The shift significantly impacts the political scenario, as the Congress now finds itself without representation in the 60-member assembly. The NPP's strengthened position with 32 seats solidifies its leadership within the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government.
