Trump Slaps Brazil with Punitive Tariffs Amidst Political Tensions
President Trump announced a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods, targeting sectors linked to former President Bolsonaro amidst his trial for coup plotting. Although aircraft, energy, and orange juice were exempt, the move sparked diplomatic tensions. Brazil condemned the sanctions and hinted at possible retaliations.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a steep 50% tariff on Brazilian goods, citing a 'witch hunt' against ex-President Jair Bolsonaro as the catalyst. However, the order spared certain sectors, including aircraft and energy, from the brunt of the levies.
Alongside the tariffs, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on Alexandre de Moraes, the Brazilian Supreme Court justice overseeing Bolsonaro's trial for allegedly plotting a coup. Moraes is accused of censorship and oppressive actions against U.S. and Brazilian entities.
This diplomatic rift saw Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva rallying in defense of Moraes. Despite the turbulence, there remains room for negotiation as U.S. exemptions relieved many Brazilian industries.
