In a strategic leadership shift, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has appointed its national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, as the party's new leader in the Lok Sabha. Sources confirmed the development on Monday.

Banerjee, who represents Diamond Harbour and is a three-time Member of Parliament, takes over from veteran Sudip Bandopadhyay of Kolkata Uttar. Party insiders revealed that Bandopadhyay stepped down due to declining health.

The decision, made during a virtual meeting of TMC lawmakers and presided over by party chief Mamata Banerjee, underscores the party's forward-looking approach. The party, holding 29 Lok Sabha seats, remains pivotal in the opposition INDIA bloc.
