In a fiery critique of the BJP, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the party of conspiring against Bengali-speaking migrants via voter list purges. Addressing a massive rally on Wednesday, she warned of exposing the central government internationally if genuine voters faced disenfranchisement.
Banerjee, breaking her tradition of not internationalizing domestic problems, cautioned that the BJP's alleged citizenship verification under Special Intensive Revision (SIR) might lead to a 'backdoor NRC', targeting marginalized communities. This threat comes as she accuses the BJP of laying groundwork to disenfranchise minorities and opposition voters systematically.
Her rhetoric escalated during interactions with migrant families, students, and tribal leaders in Jhargram, alleging that fears of voter exclusion have led to suicides. Banerjee urged action against voter list manipulation, asserting the BJP's motives align with broader exclusionary strategies executed under the banner of citizenship documentation.
