In response to the U.S. implementing 50% tariffs on Brazilian goods, Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed reluctance to engage in direct talks with U.S. President Donald Trump. Lula described the potential discussions as a 'humiliation,' emphasizing Brazil's sovereign stance amidst the diplomatic tension.
Despite the challenging trade environment imposed by Trump's administration, Lula remains firm in his approach, stating Brazil will not impose reciprocal tariffs but will continue with cabinet-level discussions. Lula also criticized Trump's demands linked to the prosecution of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.
Highlighting previous U.S. interventions in Brazilian history, Lula stressed that the Brazilian judiciary stands independent of foreign influence. His administration is exploring domestic strategies to mitigate the tariff impacts and is keen on collaborating with BRICS nations for a united response.
