Myint Swe, who assumed the role of Myanmar's acting president amid controversy when the military ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021, has passed away at 74, the military announced.
According to the military's information office statement, he died at a military hospital in the capital, Naypyitaw, on Thursday morning. Persistent health issues had plagued him since last year, forcing him to relinquish active presidential duties more than a year prior.
Although his funeral will be held at the state level, the date remains undisclosed. Myint Swe's death marks the end of a career rooted in military alliances and political maneuvering, as he played crucial roles both in maintaining military control and navigating political tensions within Myanmar.
