Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee launched a fierce criticism of the central government following the United States' decision to introduce a 50% tariff on Indian goods, labeling it a 'diplomatic failure'. The move, according to Banerjee, poses a significant threat to India's economic stability, particularly affecting crucial sectors such as IT, pharmaceuticals, and textiles.
Banerjee, serving as the TMC national general secretary, questioned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government on why such a hefty tariff was sanctioned. Speaking from Kolkata before departing for a critical opposition meeting in New Delhi, he called out those who had publicly supported former U.S. President Donald Trump, emphasizing the gravity of the economic impact.
The new tariff order, reportedly a reaction to India's ongoing purchase of Russian oil, adds a substantial 25% increase to the existing levies on Indian exports, excluding a minor exemption list. This move aligns with Trump's Executive Order on addressing threats to the U.S. from the Russian Federation, intensifying trade tensions and raising alarms within Indian export circles.
