A Road to Nowhere: Russia's Stance on Ukraine Security Talks
Russia has criticized Western efforts to resolve Ukraine's security issues without its involvement. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov insists on Russia's participation in any security guarantees for Kyiv. Moscow rejects NATO troop deployment in Ukraine and emphasizes the need for collective decisions that include Russia.

Russia has firmly criticized efforts by Western nations to resolve Ukraine's security issues without its involvement. On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that attempts to offer security guarantees to Kyiv without Moscow's participation would be ineffective.
Lavrov emphasized that Russia supports "truly reliable" security guarantees for Ukraine, referencing a 2022 draft accord discussed in Istanbul. This proposal, although initially rejected by Kyiv, could serve as a model for future agreements.
Moscow demands direct engagement from Western governments on Ukraine's security, rejecting NATO troop deployments in the region. Lavrov accused European leaders of clumsily escalating tensions, urging for direct and constructive dialogue.
