Chander Shekhar, a representative of the Congress party in the Himachal Pradesh assembly, concluded his fast unto death on Tuesday after Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri intervened. Agnihotri, along with other leaders, offered Shekhar juice, effectively persuading him to end the protest.

The demonstration was sparked by allegations of negligence in the construction of National Highway 3, affecting the Dharampur constituency. Shekhar claimed that erroneous road construction has not only delayed progress but also caused significant damage to homes, affecting roughly 400 families in the region.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu emphasized the seriousness of the situation, noting the involvement of Shekhar, a ruling party MLA, in the protest. Sukhu assured that concerns have been communicated to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, urging for comprehensive project reports and increased accountability from construction authorities.
