Peoples' Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti alleged she was placed under house arrest on Thursday, preventing her from offering condolences in Sopore for the late Abdul Gani Bhat, former Hurriyat Conference chairman.
Mehbooba Mufti denounced the move, calling it a depiction of the harsh and undemocratic reality in Jammu and Kashmir. She also addressed recent anger at the Hazratbal Shrine, condemning the BJP for its refusal to acknowledge the public's rising discontent fueled by longstanding grievances.
Similarly, Peoples' Conference chief Sajad Lone and Hurriyat's Mirwaiz Umar Farooq reported house arrests, criticizing the government for denying them the chance to pay their respects to Bhat, whom they hailed as a pacifist.
