In a notable show of defiance, China and the Taliban have firmly rejected US President Donald Trump's proposal to reclaim the strategic Bagram air base in Afghanistan. Beijing has cautioned against provocations that could stir regional tension, while the Taliban reiterated Afghans' longstanding opposition to foreign military presence.
The Bagram air base, near the Chinese border, was vacated by American troops in 2021 as per President Biden's directive amidst the Taliban's takeover of Kabul. Trump's recent remarks during a UK visit underscored the base's strategic location, just an hour away from China's nuclear arsenal.
Reacting strongly, a Taliban official emphasized the rejection of Trump's proposition, advocating instead for economic and political engagement with the US devoid of military involvement. China's foreign ministry also expressed opposition, urging all parties to contribute to regional peace and stability.
