Dhangar Community Struggle: Activist Dipak Borhade Ends 16-Day Protest

Dhangar activist Dipak Borhade concluded a 16-day protest on Thursday that demanded Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for his community, stating that the government has requested more time to address the longstanding demand. Borhade emphasized their continued struggle for inclusion on the ST list.

Ending the protest, Borhade's daughter Ahilya symbolically handed him a glass of juice. He expressed to the media that although they have waited for over 75 years, they are willing to give the government more time to fulfill their demand. However, Borhade remained steadfast in continuing their fight until they achieve the desired status.

The Dhangar community, accounting for nearly nine percent of Maharashtra's population, has been campaigning for inclusion in the ST list for decades. Despite current reservations under the Nomadic Tribes category within the OBC quota, Borhade is advocating for a formal proposal to the Centre to secure the ST classification. Talks with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis took place on September 29 in Mumbai, indicating ongoing negotiations.
