Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the renaming of the Navi Mumbai International Airport to 'Loknete DB Patil Navi Mumbai International Airport' to honor the late politician and activist DB Patil. This change follows state and central government approvals, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi endorsing the decision.
The initiative highlights the Maharashtra government's intention to pay tribute to influential figures by renaming airports, which include future plans for Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar airports. The Pune airport is set to be named after Jagadguru Sant Tukaram, and the Aurangabad airport after Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
Fadnavis assured that judicial procedures are in place to rescind cases against activists linked to airport renaming protests, ensuring their employment prospects remain unaffected. This step aims to appease protesters and maintain harmony as the new naming policies are formalized at the central level.
